The Mighty Red Giants Fall

Stunned Torres
After all the hard work, the tears, blood, and sweat put into keeping the 35 game streak going – it all came crashing down by one single game against the most unlikely of candidates, the Americans.
Yes the game everyone, even myself, thought to be a piece of cake for Spain turned out to be a living nightmare that will trail Spain for years to come. Torres found himself to play 90 minutes of miserable football against the American opponents.
The Americans grabbed a surprising lead against the number one team in the world in the 26th minute when Altidore beat Capdevila to a Dempsey pass before finding the back of the net from just inside the area. Casillas got a hand on the ball, but the keeper’s touch wasn’t enough as the ball went in off the near post.
The USA made Spain work hard throughout the first half, making it nearly impossible for Spain to break throughout the back-line defense of the Americans. Towards the end of the first half however, Torres sparked a glimmer of hope when he turned Bocanegra inside out before drilling a shot that looked destined for the bottom corner until Howard’s outstretched foot blocked the striker’s effort.
In the beginning of the first half Spain came out strong, showing why they were the best in the world. Thanks to an inspired Tim Howard, the US was able to weather the on storm of Spanish threats by Villa and Ramos.
All hopes of a Spanish combat were shattered as in the 74th minute the American’s made another goal for the day as Ramos stood dumbfounded with the ball inches away from the post and Dempsey took his chance and kicked the ball away from Ramos and into the net.
Trying to keep their heads up after such a humiliating defeat, Torres and the rest of Spain will try to focus in when they face South Africa for the 3rd place.
