The key to Spanish success – friendship?

Confederation Cup
Confederation Cup
After the hard earned victory of 2-0 against the might South Africans , the win ensured the European champions a spot in the semi-finals Wednesday against (shockingly) the USA team.

Looking over the victory Spain had against South Africa, this is what Anfield number ’9′ had to say:

“Our opponents know what they have to do to make life hard for us, and they try to get us to play their game. South Africa got everyone back behind the ball and we found it difficult to find a way through. The chances though do eventually arrive because we have quality players.

We have to stick with the way we like to play the game until the final whistle. Matches last 90 minutes, and we will insist on trying to carve out chances by sticking to our passing game, from the first to the last minute.

Our faith has helped us to win matches late on, like for example our victory over Turkey. The chances will come, and when you play for a team that’s always a threat in front of goal, you end up scoring.”

So what’s the key to Spain’s winning streaks? Torres weighed in on the subject:

“To reach that number you need more than just a good team and to play well. The great team spirit we have is behind this achievement. Every knows that there are a lot of good friends here, players who would give everything they have for their team-mates…that is our secret, and also the fact that the hunger is still there.”

More than a team, but friends – that’s Torre’s explanation for Spain success, which if you look at it from a far, is a plausible explanation for all their good fortune.

Well from this writer, I hope the team of friends get their wish and triumph big at the Confederations Cup. A curtain call for the biggest sports stage of them all – the FIFA World Cup. Good luck boys!

  • Yes – sadly they did loose to them. Unfortunately I was so disheartened by the game I didn’t get to writing it yesterday, but I’ll get to it now that Brazil and South Africa game is over. For a minute I almost thought South AFrica could take that game!
