For the first time ever Wigan Athletic claimed a victory over Liverpool on Monday night with a 1-0 win, courtesy of Colombian striker Rodallega.

The hosts were hustling Liverpool well and their pressure paid off on 35 minutes when a back pass from Kuyt was intercepted by Boyce whose cross was clipped past Reina by Rodallega.

Creating the first chance of the evening, a ball from Maxi found Torres in space but Torres’ volley struck the foot of the post instead of finding the back of the net.

Torres had another chance to strike an equalizer for the Merseysiders before the first half was over when he caught Maxi’s cross and turned it into a header. But the header from the cross just flew over the bar and the first half was left 1-0 in the Latics’ favor.

Torres was fit enough to be allowed to play the full 90 minutes and came back in the second half with the same determination to at least score a draw and earn a much needed point.

The Merseysiders enjoyed series of corners but failed to capitalize on any of the opportunities. At the end of the day it was Wigan Athletic’s game to win, and they indeed did that with a 1-0 score card.

Liverpool’s defeat now leads me to my question: can Liverpool still manage to place top four at the end of the season?

You can always hope and pray that the Reds somehow manage to take on the task – but that’s all that seems to be happening this season. Hoping.

With Torres back and things seeming to fall into place (although slower than I’d like), maybe it’s too early to criticize. On the contrary, can Liverpool manage a memorable comeback?

Whatever the case may be, Liverpool needs to get back to their game plan and focus in on their upcoming games with Lille and Portsmouth.

France started out strongly, but surprisingly Les Blues quickly ran out of steam and things began to get going in Spain’s favor instead.

The Spaniards enjoyed a good spell of possession as they patiently passed the ball around waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

The moment seemed to present itself when Busquets made the most of Xabi Alonso’s free kick, and headed the ball towards the net. Unfortunately the hit was too much as the ball zoomed past the post.

Still, fortune was on La Furia Roja’s side as two minutes later David Villa put the visitors ahead when his shot found the bottom corner of the French net.

Doubling their lead before the first half was over, Ramos cut into the fullback and his strike beat the French keeper after taking a slight deflection off Escude.

Spain’s 2-0 had built great momentum ahead of the second period. Fernando Torres then entered into the game for substitute David Villa.

Torres proved his fitness level was miles ahead then expected by most, taking part of some of Spain’s best attacks in the game.

Feeling the pressure, Les Bleus came to life midway into the second half, but to no avail as the game finished 2-0 in Spain’s favor.

La Furia Roja got the morale boosting win against 2006 German World Cup runner’s up and managed to break the curse that enabled them to win on French soil for the first time in forty-two years!

Hopefully this win is an omen of good things to come this summer down in South Africa!

Anfield welcomed back Spanish sensation Fernando Torres after a lengthy absence due to an injury which he sustained back in January.

And what a way to return, as Torres nailed the winning goal in Sunday’s clash against Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool won 2-1 and Torres got his name on the score sheet for the first time in 2010.

Looking lively and well, Torres managed to avoid two challenges before being fouled by Nzonzi (not the only foul Torres would be a victim of, that day).

It was at the 19th minute that Liverpool broke the deadlock, when Steven Gerrard found the inside of the net after playing a one-two with Benayoun.

Fernando Torres was impressive; his constant movements giving the Blackburn Rovers defense line a headache.

Ex-Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado was booked after failing to deal with Torres and thus aggressively tackling him.

The Merseysiders lead advantage was soon gone as Andrews scored an equalizer in the 40th minute.

Before the first half came to an end, Torres was able to tap in another goal which eventually turned out to be the match winner.

With a solid lead on their hands, Liverpool played with more confidence in the second half. However, as time went on they looked to defend their lead and Torres was substituted by Ngog with just a minute of regular playing time. A manner for Rafael Benitez to waste time there in order to protect Liverpool’s 2-1 lead, perhaps…

Liverpool played well against Blackburn and came in 6th position in the EPL table rankings behind Manchester City and Tottenham.

With Torres back in the picture, the prospect of finishing in the top four in the league standings and going far in the Europa Cup tournament seems quite attainable.

After such a murky and disappointing season for Liverpool, there finally seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Liverpool managed to pull a comforting win against Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest last night. Winning the game 3-1 in favor of Liverpool.

Goals from Mascherano, Babel, and Gerrard helped the Merseysiders reach the final sixteen spot in the Europa League.

Helping boost team morale, Torres was seen in the last half of Liverpool’s game against Manchester City, were he came in as a substitute for Babel in the 75th minute.

The traveling Liverpool fans gave Torres a warm reception as he came onto the pitch. With only 15 minutes left in a goalless game, Torres didn’t have much time to shine and the game ended in an unsatisfying draw.

Even with the draw, it was great to see Torres back, as fellow teammate Leiva has stated:

“Having Fernando on the pitch is not only a massive boost for us but it is also a great advantage against the opposition. Fernando is our main goalscorer and defenders know they know they can’t give any chances away to him because he will take them.”

Maybe with Torres coming back, things will finally start changing for Liverpool and things will be more on the up and up for the Reds.

Liverpool will face the Romanian team Unirea Urziceni on February 18th at 20:05 hours (GMT). Liverpool entered the Europa League after failing to come out top-two in their Champions League group.

Italy’s Fiorentina finished top, with French club Olympique Lyon in second. Liverpool only managed to collect seven points, but the seven points were more than enough to finish above bottom-placed Debreceni, who unfortunately for them lost all six of their matches.

This will be the first time either club has faced each other in European competition, although looking at statistics, when faced against a Romanian team Liverpool has won six games, drawn twice, and lost one game.

Realistically this is Liverpool’s last shot to win some sort of accolade and keep their sinking season above water. The Reds will be aiming to take the lead with them when they travel to Romania for the return leg on February 25.
