“I hope to repay the fan’s warmth by giving them a Premier League titleâ€
16 April 2009
The popular Spanish player Fernando Torres sat down and had an interview with “Don Balon” football magazine were he discussed his future beyond his current football club Liverpool and notable players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
When Nando was asked if he thought of anyone in particular after the thrashing Liverpool gave Real Madrid this is what El Niño had to say:
“A lot of people… like for example all the fans who wore Atlteico Madrid shirts at both the Santiago Bernabeu and at Anfield. I am always going to consider myself an Atletico fan, and it makes me very proud to say that I am.“
It’s clear that Fernando still has a lot of love and respect for his former club, even though his in Liverpool now. As much as he loves Atletico his bound to see how much the Liverpool fans love and adore him. Does he feel that he is more loved by the English club more than he was back in Atletico? I mean he has his own chant at Liverpool and everything!
“It’s a different kind of appreciation. I didn’t have to earn the love of the fans at the Vicente Calderon because I worked my way up to the first team via the youth teams, and they all knew that I defended the Atletico shirt from a young age. At Liverpool, I had to earn their praise and support. I managed to win them over thanks to how well everything worked out for me from day one.“
That’s great, so how does he feel about that chant…?
“Yes, I’m made to feel more important here than I was at Atletico…maybe the fact that Liverpool are a bigger club helps me to feel even more important.“
The Premiership is big on “fair play” a concept Nando is keen to. It makes the game flow better and faster, a quality Fernando has expressed La Liga lacks. So how does Fernando feel about his own behavior?
“I try to behave well because I have seen that fooling a referee is not good for the game. I still make the odd mistake though, like complaining at referees. I later see myself on television and end up asking myself ‘what was I thinking of?!’”
One player who’s behavior on the pitch has been questioned on numerous occasions is Manchester United’s number 7, Cristiano Ronaldo. If Nando had to, who would he choose between Barcelona’s Messi of Cristiano?
“They are two different, players but Cristiano Ronaldo is a devil on the pitch, the way he carries the ball towards the opponent’s goal is amazing. I’m sure that if he were to play in Spain, he would get more time on the ball, and his individual qualities would stand out even more.“
So does Fernando feel Cristiano would fare well in La Liga?
“Yes, no problem. But I don’t think that it would be any better for him to play there, as the way the game is played in England suits him down to the ground.
I can’t however see Cristiano Ronaldo playing outside the Premier League for a while to come, you also have to take into account how well Manchester United are playing.“
While we’re in the subject of Cristiano, the player has been linked with Real Madrid for the past year. Would Fer ever be interested in joining the club later in the future? Or does he feel leaving England for Spain be better for him and his career? This is what he had to say:
“I just can’t see myself playing for Real Madrid.
I would love to remain at Liverpool for many seasons to come. I still have this season plus another four years left to run on my contract. The club has been brilliant with me and I owe the fans a lot. They took to me as if I was one of their own. They treat me in the same way they do Gerrard or Carragher… it’s unbelievable! I hope to repay their warmth by giving them a Premier League title because it has been a long time since the club last won the league.
In a few years time I would like to play in Serie A. I would have then have played in the three biggest leagues in European football; Spain, England and Italy… a maybe who knows, the German league could be another option.”
